UNIVERSAL WASTE RECYCLING
Where can I recycle?
Households, businesses and Institutions may utilize the following recycling opportunities for universal waste and automotive-type lead acid storage batteries. Rechargeable universal waste batteries (Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), and Small Sealed Lead Acid (SSLA) weighing less than 2 pounds) are also accepted at area businesses through the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC). For battery drop off locations, go to www.rbrc.org.
If I'm recycling from my home, how should I store used batteries before taking them to a recycling center?
It is recommended that spent batteries be placed in a sealed childproof container out of reach of children, as they are known to be a choking hazard. Call the NATIONAL BATTERY INGESTION HOTLINE for advice and follow-up (202-625-3333) collect day or night.
What about car batteries I have stored at my home?
Automotive-type lead acid storage batteries are accepted for recycling at virtually all retailers that sell these types of batteries. A retailer will often pay a "core charge" or offer a rebate on purchase of a new battery. Persons (e.g., automobile owner, service station operator, retail store operator) generating, storing, and transporting automotive-type lead acid storage batteries according to the following provisions are otherwise exempted from the requirements governing hazardous waste:
- Generates in one year, stores at one time, or transports at one time in one vehicle ten or fewer spent lead-acid storage batteries of the above type; and
- The person intends to or does transfer the batteries to a person who stores the batteries or who recycles, uses, reuses or reclaims the batteries.
What are the guidelines for business and institution recycling?
Only Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Universal Waste Generators (CESQUWGs) are eligible to utilize the following recycling opportunities Internal. A CESQUWG is a generator who:
- Disposes of less than 1 kilogram of RCRA acutely hazardous waste, or a combined total of 100 kilograms or less of universal and RCRA hazardous waste, in any calendar month; and
