CHILDHOOD IMMUNIZATIONS

Are Immunizations provided at the Tulare County Health Care Centers?

Yes, our health care centers carry Vaccine for Children (VFC) and vaccines are available to children from birth to18 years if they fall into one of the following categories:

  1. The child is CHDP or Medi-Cal eligible
  2. The child has no private health insurance coverage
  3. The child is an American Indian or Alaskan native
  4. The child has health insurance, but it does not cover vaccines

(It should be noted that Healthy Families is private health insurance that does cover vaccines, so children with Healthy Families insurance cannot receive VFC vaccine.)

Why should I immunize my child?

Immunizations will keep your baby safe from some very dangerous diseases, so get them on time. Your baby will need the first immunizations at six to eight weeks of age. The Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule (pdf) shows when these are due. Get each one on time to protect your baby. Make an appointment now with your doctor or clinic for the first immunizations.

Where do I get my child's immunization record?

The doctor or nurse will provide you with your baby's immunization record. Take this record with you whenever your baby visits the doctor or clinic. You also will need to show the record when your child goes to child care and school.

Where can I take my child for immunizations?

The six Health Care Centers carry both VFC vaccine and privately purchased vaccine, so they are able to see children with private insurance, however, children with private insurance are seen through a provider visit not as a walk-in client. A parent must be with the child, and past immunization records must be provided, if there are any.

In Tulare County who do I call if I have questions?

For questions or further information, call 559-687-6903. We also provide vaccination clinics at other locations (pdf). Medi-Cal and other health insurance is accepted, or there is a $5.00 fee per child. Call the clinic in your area for more information.

How do I find out more information on childhood immunizations?

For more information you can go to California Department of Health Services, Facts about Adolescent Immunization or Medline Plus, which also provides immunization information.
