Communicable Disease Control and Prevention Units


Working with the Environmental Health Division, the Food Safety Inspection aims to decrease morbidity related to food-borne pathogens through surveillance to detect outbreaks and monitor trends. Timely and accurate reporting of food-borne illnesses by healthcare professionals and institutions is essential for effective, timely Public Health intervention.

The Immunizations Unit improve immunization coverage levels and prevent the occurrence of vaccine-preventable diseases. Current program activities include surveillance, outbreak investigation, smallpox vaccine program, perinatal hepatitis B case management, professional education and training, and community outreach and education.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV The Tulare County HIV Program offers case management services to people living with HIV/AIDS, including medication assistance for those who qualify.Anonymous and confidential rapid HIV testing are also offered.

Tuberculosis Prevents the transmission of tuberculosis (TB) within Tulare County through education, early detection, and treatment.  The unit maintains the responsibility for all incoming disease notification reports and forms, refersall suspects and cases to the appropriate facility, ensures that data are recorded accurately into the TBC Registry, and that all data are accurately reported to the California Department of Health Services (CDHS). Public health investigators (PHIs) will also enforce legal orders if a patient is suspected of endangering the public's health.
