New update as of September 30, 2011:  8 human cases of West Nile Virus and 1 horse have been reported in Tulare County.  Mosquitoes and dead birds also continue to test positive. 

 

In 2010, Tulare County had 12 human cases of West Nile Virus illness, which represents the 3rd highest incidence rate of illness in the state (there were also an additional 3 reports of asymptomatic infections).

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne disease that was originally found in Africa. In 1999, it was detected in the eastern United States; since then the virus has spread throughout the United States and is well established in most states, including California.
