How do I become a Foster Parent?
There continues to be a need for foster homes in Tulare County. Many interested families may have questions regarding the foster parent program. I hope the following questions and answers will help you make an informed decision to become a licensed foster home.
Do I have to be married?
No, foster parents can be single, divorced, or married.
Do I receive money for taking care of a foster child?
No, you do receive a reimbursement for the care of the child. The amount depends on the age of the child. The current reimbursement runs from $425 for an infant to $597 for a teenager.

Can I specify the sex and age of the children I want to take into my home?
Yes, you can request the specific age group, sex of the children and the number of children you wish to take into your home. The law does specify that you cannot have more than two children to a bedroom and the children in the bedroom must be of the same sex (unless they are both under the age of 5).
I do not own my home, can I still become licensed?
Yes, a licensee may rent, lease or own their home.
I am not sure that I would be able to work with a child who has been abused?
The Agency provides a mandatory training class that all licensees must take before the children are placed into the foster home. These classes help you understand the different aspects of being a foster parent, including how to work with child(ren).

I am interested in becoming a foster parent. What are the steps I need to take to become licensed?
Tulare County gives orientation classes which include the steps for becoming licensed. There are two classes offered every month. The orientation classes include the requirements for becoming licensed, the expectations of fostering children and an explanation of the application forms and how they are to be completed.
Is there any support available after I become a foster parent?
Our Promoting Safe & Stable Families Program offers a program called the Family Preservation Program. This is designed to enhance parenting skills and strengthen family relationships and is provided primarily for Foster families. For more information you may contact 559-685-4710.
